MATE ROV Competitors design low-cost ventilators

What an awesome use for budding robotics skills in this pandemic:

The COVID-19 pandemic has abruptly disrupted formal education for millions of students, including many who participate in the MATE ROV competitions. Grant Kahl and Eric Love are two former members of Kepler Enterprises who stayed connected with their MATE ROV competition teammates when they were forced to return home from college. All 10 members of Kepler Enterprises got together to create a self-directed project-based learning experience that no instructor or classroom could replicate.

BlueROV2 at Barangaroo

We had a great time underwater with a BlueROV2 at Barangaroo (Sydney) yesterday, finding very little rubbish (a baseball hat and a tyre) but spotted quite a number of very delicate “white plants”.

Underwater live-streaming to classrooms

It was so thrilling to share live video from inside (literally!) the Merimbula Wharf Aquarium with local Primary School students in their classrooms.

There were lots of great questions from students about aquarium residents, like the Blue Grouper, Port Jackson sharks, and puffer fish – all expertly answered by Sally. We also spotted Adam still hard at work even though the Aquarium was closed.

This clip shows simultaneous video streamed from a BlueROV2 (main screen) and a Fifish V6 (inset screen).

Can’t wait to go back!

ROV jacket inspections

ROVs were used to complete subsea survey and inspections of three large jacket structures (steel frame supporting oil & gas rig deck and topsides) off the coast of California. The ROVs logged >100 dives for ~700 hrs underwater, assisting dive teams with 131 dives totalling ~337 hours. The campaign included visual, magnetic particle, and cathodic surveys of welds and structural steel pieces.
