Remote Underwater Exploration
Life has already changed a lot over the past few years (extreme weather events, COVID pandemic, etc) and scientists are warning us to expect more extreme events in the near future. Our oceans in particular are changing rapidly.
We spotted a few different lists of recent films that might be of interest for those of us in lock-downs or unable to get out and observe these changes for ourselves:
As the ROV industry continues to develop, we are seeing more tools designed specifically for remote ROV inspections. In this case, multi-national TSC Subsea, has produced a compact, remote, 3-axis scanning tool for deployment by an ROV in Australia’s Bass Strait for coated pipeline joint inspections.

Amazing to learn that cuttlefish are so SMART! This research from the University of Cambridge shows that cuttlefish pass a (modified) Stanford Marshmallow Test, designed to test understanding of delayed gratification in young children:

Interesting to see a “buyers guide” for ROVs but we find it a bit skewed towards the Chinese-made, consumer units and doesn’t provide much about more robust, frequent-use, commercial ROVs available. Still, a good starter’s guide:
