Parcs Canada and Inuit researchers recently explored the wreck of the HMAS Terror, stuck in sea ice in the North-West Passage during the Franklin Expedition of 1845. Their ROV has captured amazing images from inside the HMAS Terror, where artifacts have been incredibly well preserved thanks to the cold temperatures and layers of silt in Terror Bay, Nunavut Canada.
ROV Used in Search for Amelia Earhart’s Plane
On Oct 20, National Geographic will be airing a two-hour special about their recent expedition to find Amelia Earhart’s Lockheed Electra 10e plane. Part of the search was conducted using the Hercules ROV launched from Exploration Vessel Nautilus.
A trailer for this special is available here and more details about the search expedition and Amelia Earhart’s attempt to circumnavigate the globe in 1937 can be read on National Geographic’s website
Cockatoo Squid
Last month, a cockatoo squid was spotted by the ROV Global Explorer at a depth of ~527m in the Gulf of Alaska. This squid is from the family Cranchiidae and its chic pompadour is actually the animal’s arms and tentacles folded back over its head. Like octopuses and other cephalopods, the cockatoo squid is equipped with chromatophores (pigment-carrying cells) that allow the animal to change colour and reflect traces of light. Amazing likeness to our local fauna!

Penetrator Wrench Tip
To stop the handle of your penetrator wrench from sliding through the cylinder body, wrap one end in a bit of electrical tape. It’ll save you hunting for it on the floor time after time!
