In a world first, WHOI (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute) launched an AUV programmed to circumnavigate the globe, following a path similar to the Magellan Expedition of 1519.
The AUV is expected to take more than five years to complete the journey, covering roughly 73,000 km (~45,000 miles) at an average speed of 0.75 knots.
