A girls-only, shark sleepover discovered in Bass Strait’s Beagle Marine Park

Thousands of sleepy Port Jackson sharks were spotted by scientists visiting Beagle Marine Park in central Bass Strait in 2024, seven years after the marine park was established.

A two-week survey led by the University of Tasmania’s Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), was intended to monitor changes in the park’s condition.

“It was very exciting when we managed to traverse over a rise in the reef to get a glimpse of the sharks snoozing 65-metres below the vessel in almost the same location as they were six years ago,” Dr Jacquomo Monk said.

First-ever footage of colossal squid captured by ROV SuBastian

Previously described only from specimens found in whale and seabird stomachs, Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, the highly elusive colossal squid, has been positively identified from footage captured by international team of researchers using the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s ROV SuBastian. . At a depth of 1,968 feet in the South Atlantic Ocean near the South Sandwich Islands, SuBastian spotted this baby squid swimming gracefully through the cold, dark water:
